Obituary for Bryan McKenna

MCKENNA: Bryan James McKenna passed away peacefully on Dec 9th at the age of 94. Bryan was born in Brighton England. After losing both his parents at a young age, he and his younger brother Peter were raised on their grandfathers (Senator JJ Parkinson) stud farm at Maddenstown Lodge in The Curragh Camp, County Kildare, Ireland. Bryan received his Civil Engineering degree in 1949 from the National University in Ireland. He met the love of his life Joan, at a dance in Dublin. They married on April 7, 1958. Bryan and Joan moved to Canada soon after, where Bryan’s professional career spanned numerous major engineering projects including working on the design of the Jacques Cartier Bridge in Montreal, and the Angus MacDonald Bridge in Halifax. In 1974 Bryan and Joan settled in Thunder Bay, where Bryan worked at the MTO (Structural Division). They raised 4 children and numerous pets. The family went on many camping trips which were greatly enjoyed by all. He was also an avid book collector and had a keen interest in history. Later in life Bryan worked with Joan and his daughter Theresa in the family-owned Dove Pottery business, participating in many local craft shows. Bryan had an infectious laugh and a dry wit that will be missed by all. He had a fondness for good food, loved his desserts and greatly enjoyed family gatherings. He possessed a deep faith and attended mass regularly. He is predeceased by his wife Joan (2009) and daughter Theresa (2021). He is survived by his sons Peter (Julie), JW (Jessica), John (Allison); grandchildren Steven, David, Shaina, Emily, Jacqueline, Runa and Eirik; along with his brother Peter and his wife Helen, his nephew Donal and nieces Sorcha & Aoife in Ireland. The family would like to thank the staff at Pinewood Court and Dr Ruby Klassen for the compassionate care they provided to Bryan over the last few years. A church service will be held at a later date.
