Obituary for Elsie Hodwitz

Elsie Hodwitz, age 96, longtime resident of Slate River, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 10, 2022 at Hogarth Riverview Manor with family by her side. Elsie was born on June 20, 1926 and was raised in Oakburn, Manitoba. While working in Brandon, Manitoba, Elsie met the love of her life, James, while he was in the army and stationed in Camp Shiloh.

In 1946, they moved to Slate River, Ontario and worked together to build a future and to start an amazing family. They began growing vegetables to sell at the market and delivered to many communities in Northwestern Ontario. This venture turned into Hodwitz Enterprises where Elsie & James worked hard and grew a successful business to allow them to have a comfortable retirement where they could enjoy activities they loved. Family time spent at the Lac Des Milles Lac cottage was an exceptionally fond memory for Elsie. She loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren and many a card game was played and enjoyed. Christmas was also another time of the year Elsie loved as she got to have her whole family together to visit for meals. Elsie was incredibly proud of her entire family and she always loved to relay the accomplishments and successes they had. Elsie enjoyed knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and quilting and she made beautiful treasures for the people she loved. Elsie & James were longtime members of the Holy Cross Church, St. Anne’s Society, and the Golden Agers. They were strong and proud in their faith and it brought them enrichment and fulfillment throughout their lives.

Elsie will be missed and lovingly remembered by her daughters Caroline (Bruce), Judyann (Bob), her son Daniel (Wendy) as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Many nephews, nieces, extended family, and treasured friends also mourn her passing.

Elsie was pre-deceased by her husband James, her parents Catherine & Frank Sicinski, infant sister Margeret, sister Mary Bruce, sister Margaret Styanowich, and sister Joyce Skurupski.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday October 18, at 11:00 am at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Holy Cross (415 Victoria Av W) with interment at Mountainview Cemetery before a luncheon at the Da Vinci Centre (Marco Polo Room).
