Obituary for Marie Wiercinski (Smith)

Márie Wiercinski (Smith) - pronounced “MAHR-ee”

Márie Wiercinski joined the angels in heaven on October 26, 2022 - Magical Person Day.
Márie was born to John and Elizabeth Smith and raised in Fort William. She attended St. Martin School and Westgate High School. Being the oldest girl of 8 children, Márie was always busy from an early age. She met and married Andrew and together they had their three angels, Jared, Mara and Nikoal. Márie was by far the absolute best wife and mother and devoted her life to caring for her family. In fact, when she and Andrew got married, she always said that they would have good, healthy meals and she kept that promise... muffins were one of her specialties. For many years she stayed home to raise her children and then she began sharing her passion by caring for others too.
One of Márie’s proudest moments was when she graduated from Confederation College with her DSW Diploma even though she had already been working for both school boards. Márie was an SSP with Thunder Bay Catholic Schools for over 25 years and genuinely adored the students she supported throughout her career. Many of her students became our extended family over the years and she made many friends in the various schools she worked at. Márie’s faith was strong, and she found solace in her religion. She said prayers for just about everyone and was always eager to put a loved one on a prayer chain.
Márie was THE most loving, thoughtful, considerate, forgiving, selfless human. She had an amazing positive outlook on life and would pull over to help any “poor wee critter” who required support whether they knew it or not. Márie was also very social and had a vast group of friends. She loved to make people laugh and did the best imitations! Márie lived a very active life inspired by music. She danced both jazz and tap at Fay Gleeson Dance, sang in the church choir and also sang with Harmony Bay at various venues around the city. But one of her most favourite things was having dance parties in her living room with the 5 fam and then eventually with her grandchildren too. She loved reading, going for walks, camping at Sibley and listening to the sound of the waves. She loved to talk to anyone who would listen and was always thrilled to catch up with her good friends. Márie had a few fav shows and enjoyed watching Y&R and Grey’s Anatomy with her fam too.
She is lovingly remembered by husband Andrew, daughters Nikoal, and Mara Hockenhull (Tony), son Jared (Julie), and grandchildren Zander, Zoey, Jude, Quinn, Cael, and Astrid. Also survived by brothers Michael (Patty), Robert, Gerard (Sue), Danny (Rhonda), Wayne (Cathy), sister Ann, sister in-law Sharlene Smith, brother- in-law Ed Wier (Wendy), sisters in-law Helen Allen (Hugh), and Julia Wojciechowski (Dave) as well as many nieces and nephews and other relatives in Canada, Scotland, Ireland, and Sweden. Márie will be forever missed by her special life-long friends. She was predeceased by her parents John and Elizabeth Smith, mother and father in-law Katherine and Stanley Wiercinski, brother Ian Smith, sister in-law Monica Smith, aunt Mary Fitzpatrick, aunt Margaret Quinn, niece Nancy Helen Wojciechowski, and numerous relatives in Canada, Scotland and Ireland.
We would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff at Pioneer Ridge Plaza 1 for the love and care they showed during her lengthy stay. Márie was blessed to be treated with such dignity and kindness.
Visitation will be held on Sunday October 30, 2022, at the Blake Funeral Chapel from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, celebrated by Monsignor Pat Stilla. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Thunder Bay or the charity of your choice.
Yours Forever...
