Obituary for Ted Drzystek

Ted (Tadeusz) Drzystek died on February 26, 2022 in the Hospice at St. Joseph’s, with his wife Yolanda by his side. Born May 25 1925 in Bialobrzegi, Poland. Captured by Nazis in 1942 escaped three times, put in jail, sent to Auschwitz German concentrations camp then to Mauthausen in Austria them to Guzin and back to Mauthausen where he was from January 13, 1943 to May 5, 1945. Liberated by Americans May 23, 1945. Joined the Polish Army, Brygada Swietokrzyska, affiliated with the US Army under General Patens, Kompania Wartownicza. Went to Germany with army. Applied for passport to come to Canada August 26, 1947 in Frankfurt, August 30, 1947 he received visa in Hamburg. Come to Canada on September 9, 1947.
Worked at various bush camps and mines then moved to Toronto. Met his wife in Fort William in 1949. Married August 9, 1952 to Yolanda Filipuzzi in St. Stanislaus Church in Toronto. Moved back to Fort William in 1956. Worked for various companies. Started his own business 1960 (Lakehead Dry Wall). Loved the outdoors, fishing, berry picking and mushroom. Member of St. Casimir’s Church, Royal Canadian Legion Polish Branch 149 (member of the Colour Party). Survived by his wife Yolanda (69 years of marriage), sister in-law Doreen Filipuzzi and family, nieces and nephews in Canada and Poland, child in Germany. Predeceased by baby son 1953, parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services for Ted Drzystek will be held on Thursday, March 3 when family and friends will gather in St. Casimir’s Roman Catholic Church for funeral Mass beginning at 1:00 pm celebrated by Rev. Piotr Dudek. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, March 2, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in the Blake Funeral Chapel, with Vigil Prayers offered at 7:00 pm. He was cremated. Burial in Poland.
