Obituary for Warren Buttars

It is with great sadness that the family of Warren Buttars announces his passing. On Friday, May 13, 2022, he lost a short battle with cancer, with loving family at his side.

Warren Earl Buttars was born on October 5, 1951 to Vincent and Dorothy Buttars at McKellar Hospital in Fort William, Ontario. He attended Hyde Park & Kingsway public schools, and FWCI High School. It’s there that he met (in his words) the love of his life, Brenda (nee Sample.) They were married on June 28, 1975 and shared 46 happy years together. He will be greatly missed by his two sons David (Kathy) and Derek, and his beloved grandchildren Kayla & Owen. (Yes, Owen. Papa has definitely gone to heaven.) Also mourning his loss are his sister Sandy (Dennis) Axent, brother-in-law Jim Sample, niece Tara-Lynn (Josh) Carr and their children Tyler & Natalie, and nephew Bradley Olsen. Warren was predeceased by his parents, Vince & Dorothy, and sister Donna Olsen.

In his youth, he enjoyed coaching at the YMCA and playing Little League baseball. He always had great stories to tell about growing up with friends & neighbours on Bessie Avenue. It was a few years later that he found his true passion: Curling. In 1971, he was on the Doug Smith team that won the schoolboy championship and represented Northern Ontario in Kamloops, BC. In 1976, he curled with Rick Lang and went to the Brier in Regina; the highlight of his curling career! Over the years, he also participated in, and won many bonspiels throughout northern Ontario and the US. He was renowned as one of the strongest corn broom sweepers on the ice.

Warren has always enjoyed the outdoors. When he was younger, he’d go creek fishing with his parents and many friends. He loved his trips to Kab Lake with Alfie & company. He had spent many summers with family on the beach and at the bonfire at camp on East Green Bay. And most recently, he’d go exploring various lakes around Ignace with son, Dave. He also had a passion for gardening; and his hard work would result in the lushest crop in the neighbourhood!

Warren started his work career at the Westfort LCBO. He then worked as the purchasing manager at the Airline Hotel from 1981 to 1987. He returned to the LCBO and retired in August 2011 after 35 years of service. He forged many long-lasting friendships, and still had ties to many of his coworkers from both places.

Brenda & Warren enjoyed travelling; going on many trips together including Florida, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Hawaii, and 2 tours of the Maritimes. They also enjoyed many weekend getaways to Duluth — taking in happy hours in Canal Park.

The family would like to thank the nurses of 1A at TBRHSC for their special care of Warren, during the past few weeks.

A Celebration of Warren‘s Life will be held at the Davinci Centre on Wednesday, May 25 at 4:00pm. Wear your favourite Hawaiian shirt to honour his memory

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the George Jeffrey Children’s Foundation in honour of his sweetheart, Kayla.

“We loved each other for 54 years, and I will love you forever” —Brenda.
