William “Bill” Bishop
14 August 1940 – 8 September 2022
Passed away at the age of 82 years at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on September 8, 2022 with family by his side. Bill was born in Port Arthur, Ontario on August 14, 1940, son of the late Sydney and Phoebe (Skillen) Bishop.
Bill is survived by his sons Tom Bishop (Manon) of Thunder Bay, Bradford Bishop (Sharon) of Petawawa and Joseph Bishop (Kathryn) of Milton, his grandchildren Ashley, Matthew, Julia, Jonathan, Cody, Ryan, Hilary and Adam and his great-grandchildren Dawson, Alivia, Avery, Everleigh and Ellie. He is also survived by his brothers Martin Bishop (Judy) of Toronto and Richard Bishop of Montréal.
He was employed in the lab at Great Lakes Forest Products (now Resolute Forest Products) retiring from his position in 2003.
Joining the Naval reserves (HMCS Griffon) in 1960 until his retirement in 1995, Bill took great pride in his service, reaching the rank of Chief Petty Officer First Class. He was the Naval Storesman as well as the Coxswain of the unit. Since 1968, Bill was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion Port Arthur Branch 5 and served as the Sergeant at Arms, holding a position on the executive committee.
He was a member of the Army Navy Air Force Veterans (ANAVETS), Knights of Columbus and Upsala Fish & Game Club. As a passionate railroad enthusiast and member of the Thunder Bay Model Railroad Association, his hobby was collecting memorabilia and other various items relating to the CPR and its history.
Bill loved being at the family homestead/camp in Upsala, ON built by his grandfather in the 1920’s. He garnered a lifetime of memories and good times from his childhood right up to his passing, keeping a detailed log book of his days. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and socializing with friends and family at the “Shack”. He will be remembered fondly for the stories he would share of his hunting adventures.
Funeral service will take place at The Blake Funeral Chapel on Thursday September 15, 2022 at 1:30 pm with internment at Mountain View Cemetery followed by a reception at the Royal Canadian Legion Port Arthur Branch 5, Imperial Room, 229 Van Norman Street at 3:30 pm where family and friends are welcome to share their special memories.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Royal Canadian Legion, Port Arthur Branch 5 will be greatly appreciated.
