Obituary for Zenoviy "Sid" Gelmich

Zenoviy (Sid) Gelmich passed away unexpectedly on March 15, 2023. Sid was born in Insinger Saskatchewan on November 19, 1937 to Sophie and Stephen Gelmich.
Sid moved with his parents to Fort William, where he grew up on Euclid Ave. in Westfort. Sid met the love of his life, Arlene Bailey, and they were married in June, 1960. Sid had many jobs in his early years until he started his paper mill career at Great Lakes Forest Products where he worked for 39 years until his retirement in 1999. Sid started in the wood room, moved to millwrighting and retired as a mechanical superintendent.
Sid was very involved in sports. He and his uncle coached baseball and started the Wesfort International Little League. He coached hockey in Westfort before moving on to the Elks organization where he was manager of numerous Elks 82’s travelling teams. He was also involved in starting up the Elks Power Skating program. After hockey he moved on to spend numerous years as a board member at Fort William Curling club and even coached a junior team a the Ontario Winter Games. Sid’s volunteering wasn’t just with sports. He was the president of the Great Lakes Credit Union and he and Arlene were volunteers with St. Vincent de Paul at St. Agnes parish.
The most important thing in Sid’s life was his family. He and Arlene followed their two sons Doug and Danny through all their life’s endeavors with school, work and sports and was always available to lend a hand and some fatherly advice. The joys of Sid’s life were his two grandchildren, Justin and Jenna. Sid and Arlene didn’t miss any of the grandchildren’s events from hockey, to soccer, to dance, to gymnastics and the list goes on. Sid also loved his three fur grandchildren Bella, Hurley and Blanca.
Sid and Arlene bought a piece of land in 1969 on Cummins Lake where they built their piece of heaven. He loved to spend as much time as he could with their family and friends. After Arlene passed away, Sid became quite a cook. He looked forward to his calls with his brothers and kept contact with all his friends from the mill, curling and hockey.
Sid was predeceased by his mom and dad Sophie and Stephen Gelmich, his mother and father in law Phylis and Arthur Bailey, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Lorraine and James Teskey, and sister-in-law Edna Bailey.
Sid is survived by his two sons Doug (Tammy) and Danny, his grandchildren Justin and Jenna, his brothers Ernie (Louise), and Gene (Jeannette) and his nieces Elizabeth, Joni, Susan (Rueben , Johnathon), Krista (Larry, Jonathon, Sophie) and Julie.
Special thanks to the two police officers Jesse Buob and Brett Wolframe, the EMS staff, and the staff of TBRHSC Emergency Department who attended to dad.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 when family and friends will gather for Funeral Mass in St. Agnes Parish, 1019 Brown St., beginning at 11:00 am, with Rev. James Panikulam presiding. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral. A private interment will take place at Mountain View Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family respectfully request donations in Sid’s memory to the Health Sciences Foundation-Northern Cardiac Fund. Arrangements entrusted to the Blake Funeral Chapel, 200 May Street S.
